When Get Going founder and CEO Ethan Fleming was told he’d failed a major Cert III & IV Personal Training assignment, he didn’t take it lying down. The assignment, which required Ethan to develop a business plan for a mobile PT business, was shot down in flames by his lecturer who labelled it ‘impossible’. But rather than give up, Ethan took it as a challenge and turned his assignment into one of Australia’s fastest scaling mobile fitness brands, with an emphasis on personalisation above all else - all by the age of 24.
With annual revenue on track to surpass $2 million in just three years, and a growing family of Get Going team district leaders, instructors and clients, Ethan’s single failure has become the fuel for his soaring success. Looking to the future, Get Going’s growth rate is set to further increase as they launch their new franchising model, giving trainers the opportunity to become business owners in a fully-supported and mentored network.
For Ethan, the growth of his company is the result of hard work and laser focus on his goals, taking him from a kid who always dreamed of owning his own business to a successful founder at only 24. “It’s important to me that I own where I’ve come from. When I started Get Going PT, I didn’t come from much and I didn’t have much except for an idea that I’d only been told would never work.”
“I’m up every day at 4:30am and have not stopped putting in the hours to prove that wrong. I love what I do and I am completely focused on growing my business and growing myself as a person.” The business has a diverse range of clients from AFR Young Rich listers and reality TV stars to working professionals and stay-at-home parents, which Ethan says proves the success of Get Going’s highly personalised business model, that doesn’t treat clients as ‘one size fits all’. “A personal training business is nothing new, it's something that has been done. The number 1 reason our company is exploding is that we PUT OUR PEOPLE FIRST, in every single way possible. We have built a business model and system that is designed to make people absolutely love their job.”
“As a kid I travelled a lot and moved homes fourteen times before the age of 14. It wasn’t the easiest upbringing, but it did teach me that the only way to make friends quickly and build great relationships is to realise everyone is different, and take the time to get to know them. I have translated this into a business model which actively seeks to understand what makes each client ‘tick’, and build lasting rapport.” In late 2019, Ethan began considering options to scale Get Going, and decided to franchise the business rather than pursue an equity raise. He has already signed his first franchise for 2020.
“After months of deliberation and research I decided that franchising the business would not only allow us to expand quickly, but also allow a number of our existing team to explore their passion for owning their own business within a proven and supportive model.”
“I hated my career when I was in construction, and I vowed to myself when building this business that my number 1 goal was to build a company so god damn ethical and considerate, that every person that works for us loves their career more than anything in the world.” “We are proud to build AMAZING, passionate leaders, which breeds fantastic and caring employees. We will continue to put our staff first, and those staff will continue to put our clients first. The staff testimonials and infectious culture prove it’s working, and that makes me very happy.”
The other side of this vision is about the trainers and our staff. I wanted to create an environment where trainers could focus on what they love, not sales and leads. By providing a workplace where trainers can thrive and grow, this is the reason we are successful - we have an extremely high retention rate, which is in stark contrast to the high turnover of people in Australia’s personal training industry. We are passionate about changing those statistics Get Going PT has expanded into over 2,000 suburbs across Victoria, NSW and Brisbane, changed the lives of over 4000 people, conducted over 50,000 PT sessions, and has hit its annual revenue target of $2 million.
Ethan lives in Melbourne, Australia and the Get Going PT HQ warehouse is located in Clayton South, Victoria.
In 2018, Ethan made headlines for doing 11,000+ burpees for 24 hours straight to raise money for men’s mental health charity Livin.org. He also recently attempted the world’s most amount of chest to floor burpees in 60mins to raise money for the Australian fires. Ethan has the long-term goal of making or breaking 40 Guinness World Records before the age of 40.
Ethan is extremely passionate about self-education and in the last 3 years has actively listened to over 3276 hours worth of audiobooks and podcasts. He believes the more you can learn, the more you can give. In addition to their new franchising model, Get Going is eyeing further national expansion and is actively preparing for international entry too.
